Avoiding Damage To Your Hair From Too Much Styling

April 16, 2009 by tracy · Leave a Comment

It is common to hear how daily styling can cause damage to your hair that will keep it from looking its best. Of course curling irons and flat irons are notorious for being especially harsh to your hair when used often. But you can use these hair styling tools on your hair without any fear at all if you take a few precautions to take care of your hair and protect it from the heat of these tools.

Try to avoid using your hair iron or curling iron every day, many women wash their hair daily, which strips it of moisture, and then styles everyday. Most women would be fine with washing their hair every other day and using their professional hair iron only when they need to remove the body for that straight hairstyle.
It is also very important to keep your hair well moisturized to protect it from the heat. Also use professional hair tools that are designed to lock in your natural moisture instead of stripping it out of your hair. A variable temperate setting is also extremely useful so that you can make sure you are using only enough heat to style and not so much you are damaging your hair.

Setting The Ladies’ Straight: The Truth About Hair Tools

February 6, 2009 by Elena · Leave a Comment

Recently at a ladies’ getaway weekend I had the opportunity to talk about hair styles with my girlfriends and then witness the transformation between day and night time hair styles. It was very interesting to learn that some of the ladies I was with, didn’t believe in using their hair tools for daily use, only for going out at night, or for special occasions. I was shocked, because I use my hair straightener every day.

When I asked why they saved their hair irons and curling irons only for special occasions, there were two main answers: 1) they thought that frequent use of their tools would damage their hair, and 2) they thought it was special if they reserved the looks that hair tools gave them for nights out.

I argued against both of these points, and I’ll share them with you as well because I’m pretty sure they’re common misconceptions.

The first point, that hair tools will damage your hair if you use them daily, is absolutely false, unless of course you are using cheap, low quality hair tools and if this is the case, you need to value yourself and your hair much more. High quality, professional quality hair tools will not damage your hair if you use them frequently. In fact, ceramic hair tools infuse your hair with moisture giving it a shiny, healthy look and if you choose hair tools with tourmaline, the negative ions will seal each hair cuticle allowing your hair to lay flat against your head, protecting it from damage and a bad case of the frizzies.

If you do use a low quality, inexpensive hair tool that uses metal plates or a metal barrel, you may burn your hair because there are hot spots, or snag or pull your hair causing it to rip and tear. So the answer to this question is, if you use a good quality, ceramic hair tool, you will not damage your hair, even if you style it everyday.

For the second argument, that they wanted to save their special hair looks for night time or going out, I have to argue. Hair tools are great at creating both day time looks and fancier and more sophisticated evening looks. Just because you’re headed to the office, or driving your kids to school, should you look as if you don’t care about yourself? Absolutely not! Every day should be an occasion and an excuse to do your hair. Obviously, if you want to keep it simple during the day, use your straightener to flatten your hair out and give it a sleek look. When it’s time to go out for that special date, or a nice dinner, take your straightener and give yourself a few sassy curls, or some flips out for the ends of your hair. You can use your hair tools to create versatile looks that are good for both day and night.

In my opinion, if you are going to invest in a professional hair iron or curling iron, get your use out of it. Use it every day and experiment with some fabulous styles for when you go out at night or for that special dinner with your husband. Everyone deserves to look fabulous every day!

Getting Curls With Either Curing Irons or Hot Rollers

January 25, 2009 by tracy · Leave a Comment

For women who want to add anything from tight kinky curls to loose gorgeous waves to their hair the two most popular ways to get this done is with a curling iron or a set of hot rollers. Most women prefer one method to another and really there is no real wrong answer it is a matter of which one you are most comfortable with.

Hot rollers have the advantage of creating curls in your hair where you place them and then leaving your hands free while the heat does its magic. This can help you speed up the styling process and your probably already hectic morning. Of course with hot rollers you do sacrifice some control but they do produce consistent curls.

Curling irons offer more versatility than hot rollers in creating various types of curls as well as the placement in the hair. With a ceramic curling iron you can easily just curl the ends of your hair or add a few simple loose curls throughout your hair for a look with more volume. There is no better way to curl the size and shape of a curl in your hair than with a curling iron.

Curling Irons Sure Have Changed!

Probably one of the first hair styling tools you ever owned was a curling iron. In fact, if you went to high school in the early nineties, a curling iron was essential in order to create those sky high bangs that were so popular. Do you remember how you choose what curling iron you should use back then? Probably not, but I would bet that you didn’t choose your curling iron based on how good it would be for your hair. In fact, it hasn’t been until recently that hair styling tools have actually benefited hair. However, there are a few things that you should keep in mind when you are looking for a curling iron, because they have come along way since you first started using them.

If you are thinking about getting a curling iron, don’t make the mistake that they are only good for curling your bangs up to great heights. Curling irons are useful for so much more than that. If you have always wanted wavy, sexy curls, then a curling iron is the perfect tool for you. Or maybe it’s tight, spiral curls you’re looking for? A curling iron is also the tool of choice for you.

Be sure when you are looking for a curling iron to choose the barrel width that’s right for the style you want to achieve. Because curling irons come in a wide variety of barrel sizes, from ¾” up to 2” barrels. If you are looking for tight curls, choose the smaller curling iron barrel size. But if loose waves are your thing, you’ll want the larger barrel. It’s important to note that if you have short hair, you should not choose large barrel sizes, they are only useful on longer hair. Shorter hair does better with smaller barrel sizes as they are easier to negotiate on short hair. If you have medium length hair and want to have some versatility when you style, you may want to consider a 1” barrel size because they are the most versatile and you can create quite a bit of style with this size.

Another consideration when you are choosing a curling iron is the material of the barrel. Look for a ceramic curling iron because ceramic is an excellent material choice. Ceramic is known for conducting heat evenly and quickly so you do not need to worry about any hot spots developing on your iron which will burn your hair. Ceramic also smoothes your hair as it styles, so your hair will not look frizzy or over treated.

Other features to look for in a curling iron include ionic technology which actually locks in natural moisture and oils to make hair look healthier than before. Silver technology is also a great feature, because the silver kills bacteria and germs that may be in your hair or on your styling tool so that your hair can stay as healthy as possible.

Curling irons have come along way since your early styling days, so take the time to research a quality hair styling tool before you make the investment.

This Year Give the Gift of Style

December 1, 2008 by Elena · Leave a Comment

The calendar says that it’s officially December, which means that Christmas is only a few weeks away. Have you finished all of your shopping yet? If you haven’t, you are not alone. Christmas can be an extremely stressful time trying to figure out what’s on everyone’s wish list. But if you have some extra special ladies on your list, I can make your holiday shopping a whole lot easier this year. All you have to do is give them the gift of style and beauty with some quality hair tools.

Giving quality hair tools like hair straighteners, curling irons and blow dryers are an excellent choice because you will be giving those special ladies a gift that they can use all year long, every single day. And in these tougher economic times, it’s a much better idea to give your friends and family something that they can use instead of another sweater, or Christmas decoration.

So when you start to shop for the perfect hair tool there are a few things you should keep in mind, especially if you are new to this. When it comes to hair straighteners, you want to look for a quality tool that will not only straighten the hair but will leave it looking healthier and more beautiful than before. You need to select an iron that uses ceramic or titanium plates because they will protect the hair and give it a beautiful shine. If you really want to spoil that special lady, a hair straightener with tourmaline is just the thing. Because not only will her hair be straight, it will actually be healthier due to the addition of tourmaline that infuses each hair with negative ions that close the hair cuticle locking in moisture and natural oils.

If it’s the gift of curls that you have decided to give, look for a curling iron that has a ceramic barrel. Ceramic provides a consistent heat that will not fluctuate which means that when your special lady is curling her hair she won’t have to worry about the curling iron losing heat or creating hot spots that might burn her hair. Tourmaline is another added benefit for a curling iron that will make hair look healthy and shiny, eliminating the dry damaged look that can occur with styling with a lesser product.

Blow dryers are also great gift choices, particularly when they cut down on the time it takes to dry your hair every morning. When you choose a quality hair dryer, look for one that utilizes ceramic coils which provide a moist heat causing hair to retain some of its natural moisture. Tourmaline is also an important addition because the negative ions actually dry the hair from the inside out which means that your lucky lady actually spends drying her hair everyday can be reduced by up to 60%. And that’s the gift of time.

So instead of another gift basket, or the latest best seller, give the ladies on your gift list the gift of beauty and style with some quality hair tools.

Simple Tips to Care for your Tools

November 27, 2008 by Elena · Leave a Comment

Let’s face it; quality hair tools are not cheap. When you purchase a quality hair straightener, curling iron or hair dryer, you are making an investment in yourself, your style and your hair. And you have to remember that despite the initial cost, purchasing a good tool will actually save you money in the long run because you won’t have to replace it as frequently and it will do the job right making your hair look great.

Yet, it surprises me when I see how some people treat their expensive hair tools. If you have an investment of any kind, you should take care of it properly and nurture it right? It’s shocking to me to see people through their hair irons in a drawer, pinching the electrical cords or wrapping the cord around the hair dryer before putting it away. These are just a few of the awful things I see done to quality hair tools.

If you are going to spend the money buying yourself some excellent hair tools that are not only effective in styling your hair, but will help it stay healthy and look its best, why wouldn’t you treat those tools well? Of course everyone will have a reason for mistreating their tools, but the biggest excuse I see is that people honestly don’t realize that they are harming their tools.

It’s not hard to take care of your hair tools so that they will last, and I have a few simple hints and tricks for you to make it even easier to care for your straighteners, curling irons and blow dryers.

* Do not wrap the cords around the tool. This is probably one of the most common things that people do. When they are cleaning up the bathroom or packing for a trip, they will wrap the cord around and around the iron or hair dryer. Don’t do this. It will change the shape of the cord and may even permanently affect the cord shape. It also can kink or bend the wires inside the cord. Also, if your tool is still hot when you put it away you could melt the cord.

Instead of wrapping the cords around the tool, control the excess cord by collecting it and using a Velcro wrap to tie it up. This will keep it neat and tidy and will not damage the cord itself.

* Take care of the cords. Besides bundling the cord up nicely, be very careful when it comes to other hazards for the cord. One of the biggest culprits for damaging electrical cords is drawers. When you have all your hair tools out on the cupboard, and drawers are opening and shutting, it’s all too easy to get a cord shut in the drawer. This can pinch and even sever the cord making your tool useless.

Also be careful not to get more than one cord wrapped up around each other. This is a safety hazard as well as a risk for creating knots in the cords of hair tools.

* Keep your tools clean. This may go without saying, but if you keep your hair tools clean they will last much longer and give you quality performance for years. All you need to do is give your curling irons or hair straighteners a quick wipe down with a damp cloth when they are cool to remove any build up. If you have a bigger build up, use a bit of rubbing alcohol on a soft cloth. Check out our guide for cleaning your hair straightener. For hair dryers, clean the lint trap at the back of the dryer to keep it free from lint and build up. It is not hard to keep your quality hair tools working and looking their best. With minimal effort, your investment in a quality hair straightener, hair dryer or curling iron will last for years giving you beautiful, healthy looking hair.

Great Styles Start with Healthy Hair

November 18, 2008 by Elena · Leave a Comment

All too often, there is too much focus placed on styling your hair and having it look good when you head out for the day. And of course that is important, you want to look good when you face the day, but there needs to be more attention placed on how to take care of your hair in between styling.

If you don’t have healthy looking hair, it’s not going to look good when it’s styled either. No matter how much effort you put into your hair while you’re styling it, it is not going to look good if it’s dry, damaged and frizzy. So put the extra effort into making your hair healthy and keeping it healthy.

When you have healthy hair, it looks shiny and this isn’t just your imagination. Your hair looks shiny because for healthy hair, the cuticle on the hair shaft is closed which means it lays flat against the head and reflects the light. For damaged and dry hair, the cuticle is open which means the hair is standing up away from the head and is not able to reflect the natural light. Healthy hair also holds on to it’s own natural moisture and oils allowing the hair to look shiny and smooth.

In order to keep your hair healthy and smooth, you must wash it regularly with a quality shampoo. Do not use anything too harsh or it will strip the natural oils from your hair as well as the build up of product. Ask your stylist for a good recommendation of a shampoo for you. Every hair type has different needs, and you need to be sure that you are using a shampoo that is strong enough to get your hair clean, but not too strong to damage it.

How often you wash your hair will also depend on you, your hair and your styling habits, If you naturally have oilier hair, or use a great deal of products every day, you may want to wash it every day. However people who have drier hair will strip their natural moisture if they wash their hair too frequently.

Never brush your hair when it’s wet, it will pull, tear and break your hairs. Comb through gently with a wide toothed comb and then when your hair is damp or dry you can brush it out. Be sure that you use quality hair tools on your hair that will not burn or over dry your hair. Choose hair straighteners that have titanium or ceramic plates, and look for curling irons that have ceramic barrels. These two materials will not burn your hair or pull or tug like cheaper materials. Look for hair dryers and other tools that utilize the power of tourmaline for added efficiency and care of your hair.

When you take care of your hair between styling and use the right tools when it’s time to create a beautiful style you will have healthier more beautiful hair as a result. And isn’t that what we’re all looking for?

Advances In Hair Styling Tools

One thing that has been the same for many generations is women usually want the hair type they were not born with. Those with curly hair would do anything for straight locks while those with that straight hair want some curl and wave. So every generation has done something to get those curls in or out of their hair and get that look they want. Women of today do not realize just how lucky they are that the hair straightening irons and curling irons available do not cause the damage that some of the methods of the past have done to the hair of some women.

Say Goodbye to Bad Hair Days

Do you have dry frizzy hair that has been over styled by chemicals, colors, hair dryers, curling irons and blow dryers? It can be very frustrating to have dry, damaged hair and not be able to style it because you don’t want to damage it further. Flipping through magazines, looking at the models with beautiful, soft, healthy hair, it’s easy to feel envious of their beautiful locks. But you would think that professional models who get their hair styled so frequently would suffer from damaged hair as well. So why does their hair look so amazing when yours looks fried?

Even if you have over styled and damaged hair, you can achieve the beautiful locks like those models in the magazines. The thing that they are doing differently than you is using quality hair styling tools and products. Take a good look at your equipment. Are you using top quality styling products and tools? No? Well it’s time you did. By investing a little bit in some quality items you will be able to style your hair every day without fear of damage.

Look for tools that use ceramic as a material because the smooth ceramic on a curling iron and a hair straightener provide an even heat which means you don’t need to be concerned about hot spots and burning your hair. The ceramic also allows your hair to slide smoothly over the tool which means it won’t snag or pull causing your hair to rip.

Another thing to look for is a tool with tourmaline in it. Tourmaline is a naturally occurring element that emits negative ions. Negative ions enter your hair shaft, actually drying it from the inside –out which means that your hair will dry faster and does not need as much exposure to the heat that can cause damage. Another benefit of tourmaline is that the negative ions will close the hair shaft locking in the hairs natural moisture. Allowing your hair to retain its natural oils help it look and feel healthier. Your hair will be bouncy, shiny and soft.

Tourmaline blow dryers are very effective at drying your hair in a fraction of the time as a regular blow dryer making them a great investment. Because if you can dry your hair in a fraction of the time, you are not only protecting your hair, but you’re saving yourself time every day. And who couldn’t use some extra time every day?

You will also want to invest in a quality thermal protectant for styling. These sprays allow you to apply a gentle mist on your hair that gives it extra protection from the heat of the styling tools. It also gives your hair a shiny finish as well. After straightening your hair, apply a smoothing balm that will smooth out any frizzes or dry pieces that are sticking up.

You may find it hard to believe, but you can actually help your hair to look healthier and more beautiful than it ever has just by using the right tools for the job. Invest in some quality tools and your hair will be healthier and bouncer than ever before and you can say good bye to any more bad hair days.
